Bob Nairn is the Viersen Family Presidential Professor in the School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science at the University of Oklahoma (OU). He is the director of the Center for Restoration of Ecosystems and Watersheds (CREW), Associate Director of the Water Technologies for Emerging Regions (WaTER) Center, and Adjunct Professor of Biology. He holds a BS from Juniata College, Huntingdon, PA (1989) and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University (1996), both in Environmental Science. Prior to graduate school, he began his career as a Research Biologist with the U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center, examining mining-related environmental issues.
Bob first visited Potosi, Bolivia in 2008 as part of his life-long research interest in mine water biogeochemistry and passive treatment technologies. His OU research team works extensively in the Arkoma Basin coal fields of Oklahoma and Arkansas, the Tri-State Lead-Zinc Mining District of Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas (including the Tar Creek Superfund Site) and in the Bolivian Andes. Having been an EIA client, he jumped at the chance to serve EIA, a truly unique organization linking community needs with sustainable solutions. When not doing field work, Bob lives in Norman, OK with his wife, daughter, several dogs, a mouse and an extensive tomato/pepper/weed garden, all of which keep him busy.
