Why am I fasting?

For the third year, EIA (Engineers in Action, engineersinaction.org) board members, friends, and family members will fast for 36 hours to raise money for the Bolivian people who live in extreme poverty.
My goal is to raise $8000.

Bolivian communities throughout the world struggle daily with basic quality of life issues; potable water, sanitation, roads, bridges, dams, electricity and other luxuries we take for granted. Thousands of Bolivian Children die each day from diarrhea and other water-borne diseases. — Engineers in Action helps facilitate sustainable solutions to meet these urgent needs. Their mantra is “We don’t build the wells, we build the partnerships that build the wells.” Without their support and hard work, our Engineers Without Borders Projects in Bolivia would be impossible. I am so impressed with this organization that I am serving on the Board and will be more involved after my pending retirement from S&T.

Engineers in Action (EIA) is a non-governmental relief organization located in Bolivia. It was founded 4 years ago to assist Engineers Without Borders Chapters in their work in Bolivia. I currently serve on their Board of Directors. They (we) provide in country support including in-country indigenous engineers that provide everything from logistics (travel, food, lodging) to follow up and community training for the EWB projects. S&T currently has two projects there.

Engineers in Action is sponsoring a FAST on October 20-22. We believe that extreme poverty and lack of access to clean water and sanitation can be eliminated from our world. We know that we can reduce infant mortality, provide better health, and increase crop production reducing hunger by providing communities with clean water and sanitation. In solidarity with our sisters and brothers who live in extreme poverty, we are FASTING and drinking only tap water, no ice, for 36 hours. We are asking you to sponsor one of our FASTers by giving a donation, per hour or a one-time amount towards the work of Engineers in Action.

Yes, I am going without food for 36 hours! So, I am asking for your support for what I believe is a wonderful program that benefits EWB-S&T as well as the impoverished of Bolivia.
