Community: Chaguarloma, Ecuador
Coordinates:
Project Stage: Partners Needed
Population Benefited: 550 people

Chaguarloma is a community in Ecuador near Quito that is divided into two zones, the high and the low. The biggest issues are in the lower zone, where many families live. Currently, there is only a water catchment system near a water spring, which is not accessible, especially to the families living in the lower section of the community. Because of the difficulty accessing water, the community has not been able to grow enough food for the community and has issues with poor sanitation and health challenges. Engineers in Action hopes to plan and install a water system that will allow the many families in the community access to clean, safe water.

Casa Quemada

Community: Casa Quemada, Ecuador
Coordinates:
Project Stage: Partners Needed
Population Benefited: 1,610 people

Casa Quemada is located in the Cotopaxi Province of Ecuador, high in the mountains. The local community is in desperate need of better access to water, which will allow them to grow enough crops to support the community, something they currently struggle with. A rudimentary system designed by locals is currently in place, however community leaders recognize that the current system is not sufficient. It does not provide access to all community members and it does not include any sort of storage capacity. Engineers in Action plans to put a water system in place that will mainly service the most densely populated, central area of the community, where the school and health center are located, and possibly expand the system later.

Comuna Guangaje women

Community: Comuna Guangaje, Ecuador
Coordinates:  0.51.42 S 78.50.7 W
Project Stage: Assessment
Population Benefited: 860 people

In the picture above, local women attend a community meeting to discuss this project in their home town, Comuna Gangaje. The women shared that they travel long distances to bring back water, which is often not sanitary, to their homes so that they can care for their families and livestock. An organization previously installed a short-term water system, but did not provide the training to local residents to ensure the system remained in working order. Engineers in Action plans to bring a long-term solution to the families in Comuna Guangaje, providing them with the skills they need to grow their local capacity and ensuring the 860 people in the rural town can easily access clean, sanitary water. The Indianapolis chapter of EWB professionals recently joined the project. Read more about the new partnership here.

Teneria Manzanani

Community: Teneria Manzanani, Bolivia
Coordinates:  15°46’21.94″S  68°38’29.25″W
Project Stage: South Florida University
Population Benefited: 92

Teneria Manzanani is a combination of two rural communities totaling 92 people. The community members chose to combine after struggling to self-sustain separately. Both communities are primarily supported by farming and livestock. Unfortunately, Teneria Manzanani lacks any type of sanitation system or a designated area for elimination, often contaminating the areas near their homes, including crops and water used for farming and animals.

A sanitation system must be researched, planned and implemented to ensure community members are not contaminating current water sources, the food chain, or themselves. A future micro irrigation system has also been discussed, but will not be implemented until the health of the community is prioritized.

Project Stage: Partners Needed
Population Benefited: 450 Families

Residents in Yucka, Bolivia currently utilize the nearest open field as their primary restroom, resulting in disease in a number of the community inhabitants. Engineers in Action is seeking volunteers to travel to the community and assess, design and implement a solution such as eco latrines that will prevent the local children and families from illness.

The local community is knowledgeable of common sanitation protocol, yet lacks the infrastructure needed to practice them. Nearly 500 individuals will benefit from this project, which will be maintained and supported by the local community. Their ongoing involvement increases their capacity while simultaneously ensuring the implementations remain active, usable and beneficial.
